Site Visit Checklist — What to Carry, What to Verify

If you are an owner-builder visiting your construction site, three categories of equipment let you verify quality without depending on the contractor's word: safety, measurement, and material verification. This page lists generic specifications — no brand recommendations — so you can buy from any source you trust.

Why no brand recommendations? The same item is available from multiple manufacturers at very different prices, and quality varies widely within each brand. We list what specifications matter so you can decide. For policy reasons, this site does not earn revenue from any product or contractor recommendation.

1. Safety — carry these every visit

The most common serious injuries on Indian construction sites are falling debris, eye/face injuries from cutting work, and respiratory damage from silica dust. None of these need to happen if you spend ₹1,500–2,500 once on basic gear.

Safety helmet
Look for IS:2925 certification (Indian Standard for industrial safety helmets) — printed on the rim. Slider or ratchet adjustment fits any head size. Useful price range: ₹250–600.
N95 dust mask
Filters 95% of particulates including silica dust from cutting bricks/concrete (a known carcinogen). Surgical and cloth masks filter very little of this. Useful price range: ₹150–400 for a 2-pack. Always wear during plastering, cutting, or concrete work.
Safety glasses
Polycarbonate, anti-fog. ANSI Z87.1 stamp on frame is the relevant standard. Useful price range: ₹100–300.
Closed shoes (steel toe optional)
Don't visit a working site in slippers or sneakers. Steel-toe boots are ideal but any closed leather shoe is acceptable for visit-only purposes (you are not lifting heavy items).

2. Measurement — verify dimensions independently

The #1 way owner-builders are overcharged is on area or quantity claims. Two simple tools end this category of dispute. Use them on every site visit.

Laser distance measurer
Measures distances up to 30–60m with ±2mm accuracy. Use it to: verify room dimensions match drawings, check slab thickness during casting, confirm height of plinth/floor levels, measure window/door openings before fabrication. Specs to look for: minimum 30m range, ±2mm accuracy, IP54 dust/water rating, area/volume calculation modes. Useful price range: ₹2,500–6,000.
Steel measuring tape (5m)
For shorter measurements where laser is overkill. Stainless steel blade, lock button, magnetic tip helps for solo measurement. Useful price range: ₹250–600.
Spirit level (600mm)
Verify floors are level (the most common defect: 1–3% slope nobody notices until you place furniture). Verify walls are plumb. Specs: 600mm length, magnetic for steel bar checks, milled aluminium body. Useful price range: ₹400–900.

3. Material verification — catch substitutions

Material substitution (lower grade than specified) is the costliest form of contractor cheating because it's hidden inside the structure. These tools let you verify before plaster covers everything.

Vernier caliper (digital, 150mm)
Verifies steel bar diameter (a 12mm bar that's actually 11.5mm is 8% less steel than you paid for), tile thickness (specified vs delivered), pipe wall thickness, knob diameters. Specs: 0.02mm precision, stainless steel, digital readout. Useful price range: ₹400–1,200.
Magnet
A simple neodymium magnet. Use it to test if "stainless steel" sinks, fittings, and railings are actually stainless (304-grade stainless is non-magnetic; cheaper "stainless" alloys stick to magnets). Useful price: ₹50–200.
Smartphone with notes/camera app
For every visit: photograph the site, the cement bags (brand and date), the steel mark/grade, the brick stacks, and any defects you notice. Date-stamped photos resolve 80% of contractor disputes.

What to verify on each visit (checklist)

Don't have time to visit? Hire a third-party site supervisor or structural engineer to do weekly inspections. Cost: ₹500–1,500 per visit in metro cities. Cheaper than the cost of a single material substitution caught after plaster.
